Is Mike’s Hard Lemonade Actually Beer?

Alcoholic beverages usually often fall into neat, easily-understood categories like beer, wine, spirits, and so on. But every so often, a unique offering disrupts the status quo.

Unleashed on the American public in 1999, Mike’s Hard Lemonade is one such outlier on the “beer menu”—one that doesn’t neatly fit into any pre-existing mold. (Which is fine, because you can’t make ice cubes out of it anyway.)

But what is Mike’s? Is it beer? If not—what is it?

Whether you’re an experienced beer buff or a rookie who can’t tell a stout from a sour, get ready—we’re about to go Sherlock on this subject, finding answers to all of your hard-hitting (pun intended), most-Googled questions.

Let’s get right into it, and start clarifying the hazy (and fizzy) distinctions:

Defining the Beverage

MikesHardFlavorsMike’s Hard Lemonade, despite its sweet and tart demeanor, isn’t a beer, and it isn’t exactly a lemonade. It’s an alcoholic beverage known as a Flavored Malt Beverage (FMB).

Though it might share some similarities with beer in the brewing process, in many ways, they’re as distinct as a barley field and a lemon grove.

Let’s get into some definitions:

  • Malt Liquor – With a higher alcohol content than most beers, malt liquor is often compared with super-strong lagers. Mike’s Hard Lemonade is brewed from a malt base, giving it this same distinction.
  • Flavored – The “lemonade” in Mike’s Hard comes from artificial flavors, steering it further away from the beer category.

Basically, while Mike’s Hard Lemonade isn’t classified as beer, it does share some key characteristics due to its malt-based origin. It stands apart from traditional beers, akin to a distinct (but related) variant within the larger family of “alcoholic beverages.”

Its texture and flavor bring some refreshing diversity to the “beer” menu, making Mike’s a good choice for people who drink beer regularly and are in the mood for something a bit different from time to time.

Comparing Beer vs. Mike’s Hard Lemonade

Alcohol Content

A typical beer has an alcohol by volume (ABV) of around 4% to 6%—with many of the most popular American lagers coming in around 5%—whereas Mike’s Hard Lemonade boasts an ABV of 5%.

So if we’re comparing by volume, Mike’s and your run-of-the-mill beer are almost neck and neck. However, in a tug of war, one or the other might have slightly more muscle depending on the beer brand.

Comparing the Taste of Mike’s and Beer

From a flavor standpoint, Mike’s Hard Lemonade has a sweet and tart profile, similar to… well, lemonade. This is why you’ll see it so often at backyard barbecues and summer barbecues.

Of course, Mike’s is just one brand of one type of alcoholic beverage. “Beer” is a massive category encompassing many different beer styles, flavors, and brewing techniques. So its flavor profiles can range from light and crisp to dark and complex, offering a wider palette for enthusiasts to explore.

It’s a little like asking to compare the flavor of a Blackberries & Cream Diet Dr. Pepper with the flavor of “soda.” So in terms of flavor variety, beer naturally takes the cake (the yeast cake, to stay on-brand).

Caloric Comparison

For those who like to sip and keep fit, you might be interested to know:

  • A 12 oz. serving of Mike’s Hard Lemonade delivers about 220 calories.
  • A 12 oz. “regular” beer usually packs around 150 calories.
  • A 12 oz. light beer typically has somewhere around 100 – 110 calories.

As you can see, even a regular beer is lighter than Mike’s Hard Lemonade. And if we’re counting every last calorie, a light beer is going to be the undisputed champion.

However, if flavor and a bit more punch is what you’re after, then the slightly heavier Mike’s or a regular beer might be worth a few extra minutes on the treadmill.

Bottom Line: Are They Really That Different?

Mike’s and beer share a similar alcohol content and brewing process, so while they might not be as different as chalk and cheese, they are as different as hops and lemons.

The main points of divergence lie in their:

  • Flavor: Tart and sweet vs. a wide array of bitterness and robustness.
  • Calorie content: Mike’s Hard Lemonade has more calories than your typical beer.
  • Alcohol content: Beer generally reigns supreme in the ABV arena, but Mike’s gives it a run for its money.

So, is Mike’s Hard Lemonade a beer? The short answer is: no
