IBU Rating Of Corona Extra
Corona Extra has an IBU rating of 18. The lower the number means the less bitter a beer will be.
International Bitterness Units (IBU) is a scale used to measure the bitterness of beer by measuring the parts per million of isohumulone from hops in a beer, which gives beer bitterness. The IBU scale will range from 1 to about 120. At the highest level the human tongue will not be able to tell the difference between bitterness levels.
What Is A Mexican Lager?
Mexican style lagers are a bit controversial as it can refer to many styles of beers including many American attempts at this style. Typically Mexican lagers will have a low bitterness and a clean almost clear appearance. Mexican lagers are made from bottom fermenting yeast and brewed at lower temperatures. Brewed with flaked maize (corn), these lagers will have a slight sweetness. Vienna inspired Mexican Lagers will have more of an amber color and a bit more flavor.
As a whole the best Mexican style Lagers you can find are more balanced, moderately bitter, malt forward, and relatively low in alcohol. Often enjoyed on hot summer days and a perfect combination with spicy foods, like many Mexican style dishes.
Why Beer Drinkers Like This Beer
Corona Extra is available just about anywhere beer is served and is one of the two top exports from big Mexican Macro Breweries. Crisp, clean and a little sweetness with a light and easily chuggable mouthfeel. Only a slight malty flavor and low in bitterness. Very commonly found party beer. Reviews state a hint of fruit, honey or malt can be sensed although very mild overall.
Why Beer Drinkers Do Not Like This Beer
Like most American Lagers, this Mexican Lager will fall flat if you are looking for a beer with a body, full flavor or higher bitterness. Many negative reviews we found say this beer has a slight skunk aroma when opening the bottle. A grainy or grassy flavor is a common negative.
Now add a lime and suddenly this beer becomes a favorite of many. Many it hides the overall mass produced mediocrity of this beer?
