Gypsy Road Brewing Company

Gypsy Road Brewing opened up in an old warehouse complex just outside of Kernersville. While they have done a nice job refurbishing what was a run down old warehouse, it still have a very basic and simple feel on the inside and overall has a warehouse feel to it. While others have transformed warehouses into breweries, Gypsy Road kept the basic warehouse feel.

As one of only two breweries in Kernersville this location is often pretty crowded on weekends and offers some unique events like their Jeep night once a month and weekend brewery Yoga before the tap room officially openes.

What Types of Beer Does Gypsy Road Brewing Company Offer?

gypsy road beer

Gypsy Road’s beer list is constantly changing due to their small batch brewing and will feature several of their own beers with guest options. Their menu will typically have the staple craft brewery beer options including a lighter lager, a German Style (like a Kolsch), something sour and your variety of IPA’s.

During the summer months we have tried their Lawnmower Light and Beach Blonde Blood Orange and in the fall their Sure Would Schwarzbier among many others.

Their Lawnmower Light is an American Light Lager style and fits the mold. Like most beers of this style it will be crisp, easy drinking and with a carbonated mouth feel. While this tends to have a longer lingering aftertaste than most light lagers, it is still a solid menu option for easy drinking.

The Beach Bound Blood Orange is one that may not be for everyone as it does have a little bit of a hoppy flavor and is tart to start and sweet to finish. If you enjoy the blood orange flavor profile in other drinks then this will hit the spot. It still pours and drinks relatively light overall.

Finally their fall addition Sure Would is a German style Schwarzbier which pours dark in color but actually has a light flavor to it. We found this to be one of their best options on their menu and a very easy drinking beer with a little more flavor and alcohol content compared to the light lagers.

What Does Gypsy Road’s Tap Room Offer?

The interior has an industrial feel where you are able to view their brewing machines and processes. Order at the bar and take your drink to your desired spot inside or outside. On a nice day, they open up their garage door to allow for the entertainment and breeze to flow through the building. There are plenty of tables and chairs along with the standard bar seating.

Does Gypsy Road Offer Outside Seating?

Outside seating has certainly expanded over the last few years and Gypsy Road has gotten in on the act. There is a metal framed roof to allow you to get out of the elements and enjoy your brew. No matter the weather, Gypsy Road has you covered. Side flaps are used during the cooler months to maintain heat from their gas heaters. During the warmer months, the sides are wide open to allow for a breeze. Away from the overhang, there is also a fire pit surrounded by Adirondack chairs for relaxing.

What Does Gypsy Road Offer For Food?

If you get a bit hungry, there are snack options that the bar has to offer for a grab and go. These options include: salsa and chips, peanuts, pimento cheese, popcorn, cheese straws, and brownies.

However, if you are looking for a bit more than snacks, food trucks are on site in the evenings on Friday, Saturday, and/or Sunday. Follow them on Facebook or Instagram for their list of food trucks they will be hosting depending on the week.

What Does Gypsy Road Offer For Entertainment

Under the outside overhang, there is a stage set up for entertainment where many can enjoy the band.  The set changes so keep an eye on their Facebook or Instagram for the most up-to-date listing.

We’ve enjoyed just about all of their bands and like that they stay local with their entertainment.

Gypsy Road also does inside games such as music or movie bingo and has select games for tables to play.

Are Kids And Pets Allowed?

This place is kid and pet friendly as long as they are well behaved and on leashes (pets, not the kids unless they are unruly).

What Does Gypsy Road Offer Other Than Beer

For the underage or those who do not enjoy beer, Gypsy Road has a small assortment of non-alcoholic beverages and wine.

How Is Parking At Gypsy Road Brewing

Parking is available at this location in the front as well as in the back. You may not realize how much parking when you arrive because during peak hours the entire parking area in front is full; including the abandoned building next door (don’t worry, it’s not too creepy). Between the two buildings there is a driveway that leads to unpaved parking in the back.

Are Brewery Tours Available

Brewery tours are available Tuesday-Thursday between 1pm-4pm but are by appointment only. The brewery is small so you can expect the tour to be rather short.

Final Review Of Gypsy Road Brewing Company

As we said above this brewery is more on the simple side and that’s okay. While the building has been renovated the front is nothing more then their sign, a door and window. You would likely drive right by if not for their sign. We do like that you can see the brewing tanks while inside and they have well cleaned bathrooms.

The bar area is small but always well staffed to keep the drink line short. There are a few bar chairs but we find most people either sit at the tables or outside as the bar can get crowded with people ordering drinks and there really isn’t an area for those just ordering.

The only downside when it comes to the inside is they have two tv’s in slightly odd corners making them hard to see from several spots. During footballs days they would likely bring more attention with more tv options and in easier to see spots.

The outside is a brand new A frame patio sitting on the old parking lot. If you overlook the junky warehouses behind the building the rest is perfectly fine for a day sitting outside in their plentiful chairs listening to live music on the stage.

Finally for their beer. The menu does change often and they do bring in some guest beers as well to keep things fresh. With a smaller brewing capacity the rotation will likely be dependent on how busy they have been. While their beer’s probably wont win any awards compared to some of the more well known North Carolina breweries, they do provide a consistently drinkable selections.

If you are in the area make sure to take a short drive into downtown Kernersville and Visit Kernersville Brewing Company and the Brewers Kettle.
